Tian Hou Gong-Kampung Cina / 天后宮-唐人街.
Location:- Kampung Cina, Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu. 唐人街, 瓜拉登嘉楼, 登嘉楼.
Facing the Kuala Terengganu river, this historical building was build with material and craftsman from china in 1896 during the reign of Emperor Guang Xu / 光緖帝 of the Qing Dynasty. Probably a century ago, Chinese fisherman’s whom stay inner land by the river banks would come here and pray for blessing before they travel out to sea. The mural on the walls are still intact but it would need some restoration works as the elements has taken it’s toll.
There is three altar on the main hall. The left altar has two tablet on it, one tablet is devoted to the wandering souls and the other tablet are devoted to 108 brave men that lost their lives at war. The center altar is devoted to Shui Wei Sheng Niang / 水尾聖娘 / Goddess Shui Wei on the left and Goddess Tian Hou / 天后娘娘 on the right. And the altar on the right is devoted to Lord Guan Di / 關帝 and Fu De Zheng Shen / 福德正神.
I came to know from googling that in 2003 this temple was nearly acquire by the state government for the Sungai Terengganu waterfront beautification project but the decision was reversed due to public’s outcry against the move. Now, that’s a blessing.
