Lim Lian Geok Memorial / 林連玉墓園.

Location:- Kuala Lumpur Hokkien Cemetery / 吉隆坡福建义山.

I have always travel pass this memorial site but I had never stop by to have a closer look at this unique grave. Buried here is Mr.Lim Lian Geok and his beloved wife whom had passes away in 1991.

By the tomb, A time line of Mr Lim Lian Geok’s contribution to society and it’s history is engraved to the side walls of the grave along with a life size statue of him near it’s tomb. A long board with a writeup titled “Manifesting a Malayan Mindset” in four languages can be found at a shade builded next to it. This same writeup was printed in a local newspaper called Utusan Melayu in 1956 in which mr.Lim was invited to address its readers. A huge wall that has recently been re-painted with beautiful drawings of inspiration can also be found in between it’s tomb and the shade area.

Born in 19 August 1901, Mr Lim Lian Geok is well known for his sacrifice and contribution to the Chinese education in Malaya and he is also a firm believer to the freedom of speech. He arrived to Malaya as a teacher in 1927 from china. He had help pioneer The United Chinese School Teachers’ Association Of Malaysia popularly known as Jiao Zong. He was also a former chairman for this association for a period of eight years.

He eventually received his citizenship in 1951 but his citizenship and teaching permit was revoked in 1961 due to his persistence in opposing the changes made to the education system back then.

He passes away due to lungs infection in 18 Dec 1985. To the honor of his passing, the Selangor Chinese assembly hall was turn into a funeral parlor. A grand funeral took place with many respected leader and commoners taking their day off to pay their last respect.
