The Orang Asli Exhibition on Believes and Traditions

The Orang Asli Exhibition on Believes and Traditions

The Indigenous Peoples Exhibition on Believes and Traditions / Pameran Orang Asli: Kepercayaan & Tradisi.

Location:- National Museum Malaysia / Museum Negara Malaysia.

I drove pass the national museum a few weeks ago and saw a billboard of this unique exhibition. I’ve been reminding myself to pay a visit before the exhibition is over. Well, when we return, i’ve found out that the exhibition will end in 2 days time. Lucky Me 🙂

This exhibition gives a brief view onto the mystical believes and traditions of the Indigenous peoples of Malaysia or more commonly known as Orang Asli. There is much photos, text, audio visual presentation on traditional cures, spirits of the jungle, mediums, dreams and etc. Some of their craft work, potion and talismans are also on displayed. I hope the museum would create more events like this. It will definitely provide us with more indepth knowledge about the Orang Asli/Indigenous people in Malaysia.

Jo Fo Gu Miao-Johor Bahru / 柔佛古廟-新山

Jo Fo Gu Miao-Johor Bahru / 柔佛古廟-新山. also famously known as Johor Old Temple.

Location:- Jalan Trus, Johor Bahru, Johor / 新山, 柔佛.

It is not known when exactly this temple was builded. But there were some clue as when this place has been around. A date carved on their old signage give an idea that this place should be operational in 1870. And also a huge bronze bell in this temple is engraved with the date of Yi Hai / 乙亥 year, suggesting it could be made in 1875. It was said that this temple was built by Mr. Tan Hiok Nee the Head of Ngee Heng Company then along with other chinese community leaders.

On the court yard, the Tien Gong Incense pot stood grandly at its main entrance, I came to know that there used to be a hill which is located behind this temple but today the hill is leveled and this temple is flanked by modern skyscrapers.

There is three prayers hall in this temple. As you walk into the main prayer hall, there is two gods by the side that is about human sized. The deity on left with green demonic looking face is known as Huang Ling Guan Ye / 皇令官爷 and the deity on the right holding a brush is known as Su Bao Lao Ye / 速报老爷.

The chinese architecture and design in this hall is very beautiful. It underwent a major renovation between 1995 and 1996, preserving much of antiquity.

There is three altar in this main prayer hall, worship on left altar is Gan Tian Da Di / 感天大帝. On the center altar, Xuan Tian Shang Ti / 玄天上帝. Flank along its side is Hua Guang Da Di / 华光大帝 on is right and Zhao Da Yuan Shuai / 趙大元帥 on its left.

The Left altar is devoted to Hong Xian Da Di / 洪仙大帝 also known as Hong Xian Gong / 洪仙公.

The second prayer hall on the left of the courtyard, it is devoted to the Goddess Guan Yin / Guan Yin Pu Sa / 觀音菩薩 while the prayer hall on the right of the courtyard is devoted to Feng Yu Sheng Zhe / 风雨圣者 along with it’s two assistant.

This temple has a mini museum that is launched in 2007. In it, you will find old Statues of various gods, temples antique, signage/plaque, along with much photos of its chingay celebration back those golden days.

Ci Bei Bai Yun An-Johor Bahru / 慈悲白雲庵-新山

Ci Bei Bai Yun An-Johor Bahru / 慈悲白雲庵-新山.

Location:- Jalan Wong Ah Fook, Johor Bahru, Johor / 亚福街, 新山, 柔佛.

The first time I saw this temple was around 1996 and something that happened nearby back then made me use this temple as a marker for future remembrance. The second time would be about 2006. On both the trips, I have only a glimpse of this temple and had never visited it. The developments in Jalan Wong Ah Fook has change drastically. To avoid getting lost in this busy town the next day, a friend and I decided to recee the area a night before. The night drive did brings back many fond memories of my previous visits.

We were circling around Jalan Wong Ah Fook a couple of times but we still couldn’t spot this small temple that i have seen on first visit to this town.

At first thought, this wooden temple that is builded many years ago would have moved to another location due to the major developments on it’s surrounding. But it was actually due to the fact that somebody has builded a huge billboard in front of the temple. Luckily the persistence paid off.

On my visit, The caretaker was busy cleaning up the altars and it was great that he was willing to explain bits about this place. I was told that this small temple have existed before World War 2 but he couldn’t specifically tell which year. i also came to know that during those day, the temple surrounding were fill with wooden houses. People around there would often visit the temple for prayers.

There is two altar in this temple, the main altar is devoted to Goddess Guan Yin / Guan Yin Pu Sa / 觀音菩薩, Lord Guan / Guan Di / 關帝, Ji Gong Huo Fo / 濟公活佛, Wei To / 韋陀 along with others deities. The other altar is devoted to Na Zha San Tai Zi / 哪吒三太孑. There is an old photo of it’s the temples founder on the side of this altar too.

On the outside, there is a joss furnace and a shrine which is painted green that houses their Yin Tan / 陰壇. In here you will find an altar devoted to the city god Seng Wang Yeh / Cheng Huang Ye / 城隍爺 along with Da Er Bo Ye / Tua Dee Ya Pek / 大二伯爷.

Well in the end, I hope this temple would still be here on my next visit.

Bai Wan Gong-Permas Jaya / 百萬宮-百万镇

Bai Wan Gong-Permas Jaya / 百萬宮-百万镇.

Location:- Bandar Baru Permas Jaya, Johor Bahru, Johor / 百万镇, 新山, 柔佛.

Arrived at Johor Bahru very early in the morning and was invited to stay with a relative whom were mentioning and frequent this premise. After some good rest, we decided to visit this place of worship. There is a beautiful Pai Lou / 牌樓 facing the main road that is used as an entrance but a road further down will lead to the temples courtyard. I would suggest taking the route to the courtyard for better parking.

On our arrival to this temple, we were greeted by the friendly committee members who kindly explained a bit about this place and allowed us to take some photos. I couldn’t help noticing the huge Tiger General / 虎爺 located in a man made cave that was builded by the side of the temple. It is rare to see a temple enshrine a tiger general that is so large. This temple is also decorated with two huge beautifully crafted dragon pillars guarding the temple.

In the main prayer hall, there are rows of brightly lit red lanterns hanging from ceiling wall. The lights that glows from the lanterns gives a warm and auspicious feeling when you enter this hall.

There are three altar enshrined here. The main altar is dedicated to the worshipped of its main patron deity, Da Bo Gong / 大伯公. It’s military / 武 / Wu and literature / 文 / Wen officer stands grandly by it’s side. Kindly note that, based on what i can make out, the statue of Da bo Gong and it’s officer’s should be about 5 feet plus in height.

An altar on the Left corner is devoted to the worshipped of Na Zha San Tai Zi / 哪吒三太孑 or more commonly known as Zhong Tan Yuan Shuai / 中壇元帥. And the altar on the Right corner is devoted to the worshipped of the Goddess Guan Yin Pu Sa / 觀音菩薩 along with Jin Tong Yu Nu / 金童玉女 by it’s side.

On the side of the main prayer hall, two smaller shrine is builded, one is dedicated to the worshipped of Tai Sui / 太歲 and another is dedicated to the Five General / Wu Ying Yuan Shuai / 五營元帥. There is also room located behind this two shrine, this is where they housed their Yin Tan / 陰壇. Here, it is named Cheng Huang Dian / 城隍殿. Worshipped on the altar here is the city god Cheng Huang Ye / 城隍爺 along with Da Er Bo Ye / Tua Dee Ya Pek / 大二伯爷.
