Seng Ong Beow-Jelutong / 城隍廟-日落洞

Seng Ong Beow-Jelutong / 城隍廟-日落洞.

Pinyin, Cheng Huang Miao known as City/Town God temple.

Location :- Sandilands Street, Jelutong, Penang – 日落洞, 檳城.

I was doing some read up about Mr Khoo Thean Teik / 邱天德, a powerful and notorious hokkien leaders of 19th-century Penang. I came to know that he was a philanthropist and also a principal donor to this City God Temple in 1879.

Devotees were seen offering joss stick and candle upon our arrival. A piece of marble with names of people who donated to the rebuilding of the temple is place next to the main door. The interior of the temple is stained by the main years of joss offerings. I would revisit one day in the night to take a photo of its interior on low light condition. I believe the photo would come out good.

The main altar is devoted to Di Zang Wang Pu Sa / 地藏王普薩 , the altar on right is devoted to Seng Wang Yeh / Cheng Huang Ye / 城隍爺 with a huge Da Bo Ye / 大伯爷 standing on it’s side. Cheng Huang is commonly known as the City God.

The altar on the left is devoted to Qi Niang Ma / 七娘媽 and Da Bo Gong / 大伯公 with a tablet for Zhu Sheng Niang Niang / 注生娘娘 behind it. Er Bo Ye / 二伯爷 is seen standing on it’s side. There are two smaller altar of deities that is not known to me.

Loo Pun Hong-Penang / 魯班行-檳城

Loo Pun Hong-Penang / 魯班行-檳城.

Pinyin Lu Ban Hang, also known as Lu Ban Ku Miao / 魯班古廟 / North Duke’s Old Temple.

Location:- 70, Love Lane, Georgetown Penang,

I have always wanted to visit this place. I have first saw a photo of the deities/altar from a book by Keith Stevens title Chinese Gods. Then the only information I had was the deity in the book was from Malaysia.

Also known as the Carpenters Guild, which is founded in 1850s and was at No 5 Penang Street. The current temple here at No. 70 Love Lane was build in 1886. A minor restoration work that completes in 2001. This place is also a listed UNESCO heritage site in Penang.

On my arrival, I was fascinated with what I saw. The main altar is still the same as what i see in the book, the only noticeable difference is the drawing of the dragon behind the main deity is now faded. The deity Lu Ban / 魯班 which is a known patron deity for carpenters sits grandly on the center altar.

As we were walking to the back, a meeting hall, we were greeted by a Mr Lee. He was very kind to showed us around and explains much information about this place.

We were given the opportunity to take photos of sedan chairs that is used to parade the gods on the street of Penang about 100+ years ago. Also on display were tools invented by Lo Pan, Antique Banner and more. Mr Lee pointed out much of the great fine craft work done by craftsmen from china back then. One that caught my attention was the locking mechanism of the wooden main temples door which was design hundreds years ago.

Guan Yin Ting-Penang / 觀音亭-檳城

Guan Yin Ting-Penang / 觀音亭-檳城.

Location:- Jalan Sungkai, George Town, Penang

This temple was fill with devotees/worshippers offering burned joss stick when i arrive. Much of the interior on the front hall is darken and stained from many years of joss stick offering. The are also a few more altar in the inner hall.

Known to be the oldest Chinese temple in Penang. This temple was build in the early 1800s (A few website noted that it laid its foundation stone in 1728) and was a temple devoted to the deity Ma Zu / 媽祖. Back then it was known as Kong Hock Keong / Guang Fu Gong / 廣福宮 (not sure if this were the characters) which translate to Cantonese Fujian Temple.

It underwent a major renovation in 1824, and maybe, it was this time that they have renamed the temple to Kuan Yin Teng / Guan Yin Ting / 觀音亭.

Doing some read up about is place over the web, I found much feng shui and myth surrounding this temple. One that I have heard from a good friend was that during the world war, bombs that drop onto this temple during a bombing raid did NOT go off. Hence saving much life taking shelter here. Checking with the local trishaw driver, he too said that he has heard the same story but doubt that it happen.
